UAE has 191 mobile lines per 100 people

March 12, 2009

A report by UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) says that the UAE leads the world for the number of mobile phone lines per person. 191 mobile lines per 100 people, that’s almost 2 mobile phones per person. That is really an astonishing amount, considering how many laborers and other “lower class” people live in Dubai.

However 10% of UAE’s 5 million population has broadband internet. This is no doubt really bad. Maybe Etisalat, the country’s leading ISP can lower the prices for broadband internet in the country. The current prices according to www.alshamil.ae are just terrible. 249 AED per month ($67) for a 1Mbps line or 349 AED per month ($94) for a 2 Mbps is daylight robbery.

They should take a cue from Saudi Telecom and cut internet tariffs then maybe more people can get out of the stone age and buy broadband.
