New Office 2007 Fonts

March 19, 2006

Office 2007 and Windows Vista will have a new set of fonts. There are 5 new fonts as follows:

  • Calibri – A Sans-serif, also the default font for MS Word replacing Times New Roman
  • Candara – San-serif font
  • Consolas – A monospaced font.
  • Constantia – Serif font.
  • Corbel – San-Serif font

Goodbye Times New Roman, I’ve always hated you. Book Antiqua is so much better.
Here’s a preview to the fonts

The winzip file seems to be corrupt. I am not able to unzip it.
From the screenshots the fonts look impressive. I will like to use them.

I don’t know why, but for me they look bit blury. Like antialiased or something.
I don’t get crisp font not even on my LCD display. Old ones (Courier, Arial…) look just fine so it’s not my monitor :)

Any usage restrictions for these at the moment? They do ship free with Office 2007 Beta, so I suppose it’s ok to use them. I wonder if these will be freely available for other operating systems with open license (like Microsoft web fonts used to be)?

I’m not entirely sure on the usage restrictions. They probably will be freely available. Vista itself may have them as default installed.

Thank you ever so much, my Office 2007 version refused to install the fonts, even after deleting everything and a windows install clean up! I hope the system will be more stable now …
Many thanks again, Rushi,
H Dirk

Hi!

These fonts are not for free. When you buy Vista or Office, you also buy a license for these fonts. So when you have XP and download the fonts here you do not have a license to use them. This makes it illegal.
Font design is very timeconsuming, so give those font designers something to eat if you like or use their hard work buy simply buying the fonts instead of stealing them!!

If you have licensed copies of both Windows XP SP2 and Office 2003, you can download the Office 2007 compatibility pack from Microsoft’s website for free, which includes these 6 new fonts legitimately.
